Help us understand the basics here. First off, where do the cases that the Supreme Court decides each term come from? How many of them are there and how do they get selected? And also, what kind of cases does the court have jurisdiction over?

Second, the U.S. Supreme Court almost never hears a case before it is heard by other, lower courts first. There is a rare exception called “original jurisdiction” for when one
